HSIE SYLLABUS

HSIE and inquiry learning is a vehicle for conveying the diversity of HSIE. Through analysing information and values, students can make responsible decisions about social, economic, religious, civic and environmental issues that may affect them now and in the future. The HSIE K- 6 Syllabus therefore enables students to develop knowledge, understandings, skills and values and attitudes about people and their social and physical environments.

Knowledge and Understanding

Students learn about their heritages, the past and present and how these have influenced the present and may influence the future. The Australian culture and other countries are explored in relation to diversity and how they have influenced people's identities and behaviour. The impact of human interaction with the environment is studied as well as looking at the economic, political and legal systems of society.

Skills

We must foster students ability for self- direction, flexibility, creativity and collaboration in the 21st century classroom. Students must work towards possessing complex thinking skills, reflection of their leaning, visions of their role in the world and be able to apply these skills to something that is meaningful for them.

Values and Attitudes

The development of values and attitudes underpins learning and teaching in HSIE. Values and attitudes related to social justice, inter-cultural understandings, ecological sustainability, democratic processes, beliefs and lifelong learning are integrated into the syllabus.

By identifying, clarifying, analysing and evaluating personal values and attitudes, students should develop an informed and responsible attitude towards people, culture, religion, society, environment and learning. This enables students to contribute to inter-cultural understandings and the development of a democratic and socially just societies.

Board of Studies Syllabus Outcomes

Through the implementation of inquiry learning, these three outcomes can be achieved, where students are able to develop their own opinions, values and perspectives and to understand and respect the rights of others opinions, values and perspectives.

As teachers, we must provide opportunities for students to develop broad knowledge of source material as well as the ability to reflect critically and investigate current and future issues, ideas, problems and trends. Encouraging and supporting students in the use of ICT (information and communication technologies) to locate, access, view and analyse a range of sources is also an important aspect of inquiry learning in the 21st century classroom. We must be sure to provide ample opportunities for students to experiment with designing and creating using ICT and educating them on the usefulness, accuracy, reliability and validity of information acquired through various means.
